Don has been Head of the School of Engineering and Advanced Technology at Massey University since 2008.

His research interests include industrial refrigeration, heat pumping, energy efficiency and food processing.

Don was a founding member of the Centre for Postharvest & Refrigeration Research at Massey University which undertakes research, consultancy and education to support the food cold chain focussing on packaging, horticultural crops, energy and sustainability.

He is a Director of the MacDiarmid Institute and was awarded the J&E Hall Gold Medal of British Institute of Refrigeration for advancing refrigeration technology and the IPENZ Furkert Award for his achievements in sustainability and clean technology.

He was a Vice-President of the Science and Technology Council of the International Institute of Refrigeration 2003 to 2011.
